Ukachi Anonyuo hopes to have visited 40 countries by the time she is 40 years old, in keeping with her personal “40 by 40” project. In the meantime, she will remain at the helm of The Estée Lauder Cos., where she is director of Global Package Development for the Estée Lauder Skincare category. Prior to joining Estée Lauder, Anonyuo managed new product launches at Avon Products Inc. and Coty Inc. “Even though I never planned to enter the beauty industry when I finished my undergraduate degree, I can’t see myself not involved in the field somehow,” Anonyuo affirms.
The beauty industry maven once aspired to play in the WNBA and received an athletic scholarship to attend Rutgers University. She later shifted to a career in engineering and received a bachelor’s degree in industrial and systems engineering from Rutgers University. She also holds a master’s in business administration, with a focus on marketing, from the same institution. Anonyuo was featured in Essence magazine’s April 2013 Career Success issue, and in 2010 was chosen to chair the newly created Innovations Committee of the Cosmetic Industry Buyers and Suppliers. “My mentors throughout my career have taught me to always protect my brand, and that sometimes the struggles that I experience will determine the height of my success,” she says. She is guided by that counsel and the words of William Randolph Hearst, “You must keep your eye on the objective, not the obstacle.”
Anonyuo’s mother hails from Cameroon, her father from Nigeria, and she herself was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey. She volunteers at various organizations, including her sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., and the LaGuardia Academy of Arts & Technology in the Bronx, New York, where she speaks to students about the importance of higher education and of pursing careers in math and science.
