Tracey L. Brown, Esq.

Managing Partner

The Cochran Firm-New York

New York, N.Y.

As managing partner at The Cochran Firm in New York City, Tracey L. Brown specializes in employment discrimination, civil rights and municipal liability. Critical strengths and skills underpin her success as a litigator. She learned self-assurance from her father, the late Ronald “Ron” Brown, the first African-American U.S. Commerce Secretary; the late Johnnie Cochran, Esq., her mentor, who taught her to be prepared for any circumstance. While serving as deputy D.A. in Los Angeles and senior counsel at the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C., she gleaned invaluable skills from colleagues, including how to truly connect with a jury and to be creative in the practice of law; and she developed open-mindedness on her own. “What I like most about my job is helping to get justice for so many clients who have been wronged by their employers and by the police and the criminal justice system,” she states. “Advocating for them to change the way companies and institutions treat our most vulnerable helps to ensure that their struggle and the struggle for those who came before us, was not in vain.”

For the married mother of two, however, success is “a happy family”: “If they are happy then I must be succeeding in every part of my life and making them proud and secure.”

Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy at Boston College and a law degree from St. Johns University School of Law. A marathon runner, she is active in The Links Inc., Jack and Jill, the Ron Brown Scholars, the National Smart Set and the National Child Labor Committee. “I love the immediate gratification of seeing how a positive example can make a difference in a child’s life,” she says. With time and money, she would work to make public schools an innovative, inspiring and safe environment for learning.
