Robert Jefferson
Director, Finance
Brick by Brick Partners
Brooklyn, N.Y.
Age: 39

Robert Jefferson knew he would pursue a career in engineering. “My childhood hobby was taking electronic components apart and putting them back together,” he says. When he was 12, however, he started “Wake Up Sounds,” deejaying parties and events in New York. He has not recovered from the bite of the entrepreneurship bug since. He switched his major from engineering to accounting at Hampton University. “I knew that I wanted to be an entrepreneur one day. I decided that if I was a business major, I could leverage that either in corporate America or as an entrepreneur.”

Jefferson received an MBA in finance from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Today, he is the director of finance at Brick by Brick Partners, where he oversees all forecasting, reporting and strategic planning activities for the organization’s U.S., Uganda and construction divisions. Prior to joining Brick by Brick Partners, Jefferson nurtured his career at Fortune 100 companies, including American Express, Proctor & Gamble, ABC Inc. and Ernst & Young LLP. “I like working to create products and services that help give consumers enjoyment and value,” he explains. He traveled to Uganda to help build rainwater-harvesting tanks to supply clean water to a community of 10,000 people. “Now, when I turn on the faucet in my kitchen or bathroom, I think very differently about the importance of clean water and how lucky we are to have it in our homes,” he says.

Jefferson continues his parents’ devotion to youth, be it by starting an endowed scholarship at Brooklyn College in his late father’s name, shuttling his two daughters to their various activities or serving as a classroom instructor for his local chapter of Junior Achievement. “It is great to become successful, but I only consider myself successful if I can help others reach their goals,” he says.
