Dane E. Holmes made partner at Goldman Sachs Group in New York City. He joined Goldman in 2001 as vice president and was named managing director in 2004. Before making partner, Holmes was head of investor relations, overseeing both investor relations and shareholder services for the firm. While in that post, he became a member of the Finance and the Diverse Business Engagement committees. Prior to that position, he served in the investment banking division, where he led the firm’s capital markets coverage efforts for insurance companies. Before joining Goldman, Holmes worked at JPMorgan Chase, covering the insurance, municipal and health-care industries. During his tenure there, he held several positions in the Debt Capital Markets & Advisory, Mergers & Acquisitions
and Portfolio Management groups. Holmes holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Columbia University. He is a 2010 TNJ 40 Under Forty honoree.
OwensMorris Communica-tions Inc. named Kenny Johnson vice president of branded events and promotions. In 2001, Johnson founded The Richmond Group marketing agency and served as its president, developing consumer programs for clients such as Bombay Sapphire, BMW, Courvoisier and McDonald’s. Johnson is known for his knack for creating noteworthy celebrity events and promotions that connect consumers and company clients, which he will continue to do in his new post at OMC. Most recently, he launched “VIP LIVE!,” a three-event, star-studded series that showcased at the 2010 Essence Music Festival. Johnson is a weekly columnist for the Chicago Defender. He has a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in African-American studies from the University of Virginia.
Antoinette Mabry was named senior director of marketing at Essence Communications. She will report to Karen Williams, vice president of sales and marketing. Before joining Essence, Mabry worked at Boost Mobile as the senior marketing manager. In that role, she oversaw marketing campaigns and events, developed marketing programs and managed a $20 million advertising budget. She extended the Boost Mobile RockCorps campaign to 17 markets. Prior to working at Boost, Mabry held several positions in advertising and marketing, including at ConAgra Foods and at Vanguard Communications. She received a B.A. and an M.B.A., both in marketing, from Howard University and Clark Atlanta University, respectively. She is a member of the National Black MBA Association.
Scholar Khalil Gibran Muhammad was ap-pointed director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. He is the great-grandson of Elijah Muhammad, founder of the Nation of Islam. Appointed by a selection committee that included Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Aysha Schomburg, Muhammad was chosen from a pool of more than 200 to replace Howard Dodson Jr., who held the position for 25 years. Muhammad previously served as assistant professor of history
at Indiana University. While there he authored
The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern Urban America, published by Harvard University Press. An
associate editor of The Journal of American History, Muhammad holds a B.A. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in American History from Rutgers University.
General Motors named Eric Peterson U.S. vice president of diversity. Peterson will build on the company’s diversity initiatives as it works to expand its customer base. He will also continue to serve as director of industry affairs, a position in which he manages relationships with GM’s National Dealer Council, Minority Dealer Advisory Council and Women’s Dealer Advisory Council. Prior to this, Peterson served as regional and marketing manager in GM’s South Central division. While there, he led the company’s dealer development organization, which focused on appointing more minorities and women as dealer operators in GM’s retail dealer network.
Judene Walden was named vice president of integrated sales for Johnson Publishing Company (JPC). Prior to this, she was the Eastern sales manager for Essence Communications on the East Coast, where she was responsible for revenue and sponsorship for all print, digital and signature events. She also did some work in sales at O, The Oprah Magazine. In her new role at JPC, Walden will be based in the New York office where she will lead the sales team of the
Jet and Ebony brands.
She holds several
