Gloria Davy was 20 in 1951 when she won the coveted Marian Anderson
Award. Perhaps that was a propitious omen that one day she would follow
in the esteemed footsteps of operatic great Anderson, which she did,
with a similar voice of marvelous distinction. Davy, 81, died on Nov. 28
in Geneva, Switzerland.
Neither the left nor the right will have Susan Rice to kick around
anymore. Rice withdrew her name as potential nominee for the next Secretary of
State, apparently stepping aside after withering attacks from Senators
John McCain, Lindsay Graham, and Susan Collins. There were also
considerable factions on the left who assailed her mainly for her lack
of assertiveness and clarity on African affairs.
