‘When you are in a valley, all it takes is one step toward your next peak,” says Jimmy Davis, corporate executive, entrepreneur, consultant, college professor and executive coach. The statement appropriately describes the encouragement he gives in the course of his work.

In 2010, Davis, who holds doctoral and master’s degrees in industrial and organizational psychology from the University of Georgia and a bachelor’s in psychology from Morehouse College, founded Blacksmith Consulting Co. to assist businesses in building leadership skills. He started his career as a consultant in mergers and acquisition, human resources management, organizational restructuring, and employee training and development, lending his expertise to such household-name clients as Home Depot, BellSouth, United Parcel (UPS) and the American Cancer Society. As part of a $20 million initiative, he developed the human resources strategy for the Home Depot Fuel Store. “I’m committed to the development of minority youth through education and exposure similar to the Prep for Prep program I completed,” he says.

Davis became interested in leadership at age 12, when he participated in Prep for Prep, the New York organization founded in 1978 to prepare selected students of color for exclusive private schools and guide them through their chosen field. In addition to his corporate work, he is an assistant professor of psychology at Clark Atlanta University; works with Create Your Dreams, a mentoring and support nonprofit for students from third grade to college; and meets his annual goal of reading 25 books. “[Create Your Dreams] is one of my favorite organizations. It’s important for our young African-Americans to see people doing things for their communities,” he remarks.

Davis would like to continue developing leaders, imbuing them with skills and confidence. To that end, he hopes to create another leadership development program that targets African-American college students and prepares them for employment.
