In East Brooklyn, manufacturing has been the mainstay - producing an array of quality products, sustaining jobs, and building relationships with the community. The (LDCENY) will promote Manufacturing Day by conducting a tour of theEast Brooklyn Business Improvement District with eighth grade students from the Trey Whitfield School. The tour will be from 11 am until 2 pm and will cover sites such as: · Legion Lighting Co., a manufacturer of fluorescent lights founded in 1946, and moved to East New York in 1957. A third generation family business, the company has 65,000 square feet devoted to the design and manufacturing of Architecturally Engineered Energy Efficient Fluorescent Lighting Equipment. · BKNY Printing, a custom screen printing company in East New York who has been first to print shirts for many of the top recording artists like Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Eminen, 50 Cent, and others. · Rite Way Wood Crafts Co. founded in 1957 and incorporated in 1972, has grown from a cabinet shop to a full service home improvement contractor with a list of well-informed clients. In addition, other East New York companies have collaborated with this effort to make the tour a memorable one for the students. Dave Hatton, owner/operator of a local McDonalds, will provide lunch and Empire Bus Service will provide transportation. Assemblyman Rafael Espinal will be present to talk with the delegation on site at BKNY Printing. Bill Wilkins, East Brooklyn Business Improvement District Manager (EBBID) is excited about generating awareness in young people and highlighting products made locally. He feels this creates local pride, economic opportunities in the form of jobs and investments, and is compels youth to see products made in their own neighborhoods. The LDCENY, a 501 (c)(3) organization, has been providing economic development services and programs through advocacy, entrepreneurial training, and oversight of the East Brooklyn Industrial Park for over thirty years.
