Culture Keeper

Dear Editor:
I write to commend The Network Journal July/August 2006 cover story titled The Little Museum That Could, featuring Laurie A. Cumbo, founder of Brooklyn’s MoCADA. I met Ms. Cumbo over the telephone shortly after the museum occupied its temporary space on Stuyvesant Avenue in Brooklyn, N.Y. Some years and several conversations later, we finally met face-to-face. No longer strangers, we realized our common interest was the promotion and preservation of the art of African peoples. Our conversations were always animated, informative and lengthy, each of us unaware of the passage of time. This young woman had a clear vision of her goal and set forth to make it happen with an intensity of purpose. Laurie Cumbo’s job has not been easy and will not be in the foreseeable future, but she has the focus not to be distracted. MoCADA is the continuation of a path traversed by our African ancestors, with new footprints planted by Ms. Cumbo as a beacon to those who follow in their names. Thank you for the wonderful telling of her story as it stands today. She has made giant steps on our turf and plans to stay! Hers is surely a remarkable journey. Who knows where her sights will affix by the time she reaches 40?

De-stressing Tips

Dear Editor:
I thoroughly enjoy your magazine. However, since I often do not have the time to read publications that are not work-related, is it possible for The Network Journal to include articles on lowering stress? I’m in a very stressful job and it would help to have de-stressing tips in the same magazine that gives me so much business, professional and financial information.
