Letters to the Editor - June 2005
Women’s Incomes; Family Doctors
Dear Editor:
I saw the BET Nightly News report (March 28) on Black women’s incomes, in which you were featured, and could not help thinking that more professional Black women are choosing to stay home at some point in their career. I am a member of the Bergen County Mocha Moms. There are currently over 20 members, many of them professional women—doctors, lawyers, a producer, a social worker, etc.—who chose at one time or another to prolong maternity leave to months or years. This trend may affect the Census statistics. On another note, I noticed that in the list of “Best Black Doctors in Metro New York” (February 2005) there were no family medicine practitioners. While I do know many of the doctors that were featured, please consider family doctors for any future issue you have. TNJ may even want to do a story on “family doctors: myths and misconceptions.”

Beauty & Influence
Our Beauty, Our Influence
Dear Editor:
I read your article “Our Beauty, Our Influence” in TNJ (March/April 2005). I have been using shea butter for a long time and it has really been good to my skin. As a result of my good experience, I decided to start selling this product, which I have been doing now for about three years. It has helped my customers tremendously and they are all very happy with the results. When I tell people that I sell shea butter, the first thing they ask is if I am African. I respond that I am from Jamaica but this African product is one of the best I have ever seen.
