Bruce Gorden
Bruce Gorden former president of Verizon’s retail markets unit, succeeds Kweisi Mfume as president of the NAACP. Mfume left the organization last November after nine years of service. Gordon retired from Verizon in December after 35 years with the company. As head of retail markets, the biggest unit of the country’s biggest phone company, he was one of the most powerful Blacks in corporate America. He will apply his management skills to improving the NAACP. Board Chairman Julian Bond will serve as the organization’s primary voice.
Arthur B. Anderson
Arthur B. Anderson was named senior vice president, Global Research & Development and Quality, at Campbell Soup Co. He will report to Carl Johnson, senior vice president and chief strategy officer. Anderson has more than 30 years of experience in research and development. Prior to his new appointment, he was senior vice president of advanced technology for PepsiCo, covering the snacks and beverage businesses. He is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists and the Executive Leadership Council.
Ramon Gregory
Ramon Gregory joined Chicago’s Cardean Learning Group as executive vice president for enrollment and student services. Gregory has more than 20 years’ experience in the field of customer contact centers and operations. Prior to joining Cardean Learning, he was senior vice president, customer service operations, at The Home Depot, Atlanta, and senior vice president, global call center operations, at American International Group. Gregory is the founder and principal of The Gregory Group LLC, an executive consulting and operations firm.
Edmond L. Hughes
Edmond L. Hughes joined Community Capital Bank as vice president of business development. Hughes will be the officer in charge of the Livingston Street (Brooklyn) Branch and will assist in business development in all five boroughs, with downtown Brooklyn serving as his primary target market. Hughes began his banking career at Banker’s Trust Co., where he spent more than 10 years in commercial lending. He subsequently moved to New York National Bank, serving 18 years there, including as chief lending officer.
Debra L. Lee
Debra L. Lee will succeed Robert L. Johnson as chief executive of BET, effective immediately. Johnson will serve as chairman until his retirement in January 2006. Lee was president and chief operating officer of BET. A Harvard University—educated lawyer, Lee joined BET as vice president and general counsel in 1986 after serving more than five years as an attorney with the Washington, D.C., firm Steptoe & Johnson. She is a director on the boards of Marriott International, Eastman Kodak Co. and Washington Gas & Light.
Raymond J. McGuire
Raymond J. McGuire was appointed CitiGroup’s global co-head of investment banking, reporting to Michael Klein, chief executive and head of Global Banking. Prior to joining CitiGroup, McGuire was co-head of Global Mergers & Acquisitions at Morgan Stanley. He holds a B.A., M.B.A. and law degree from Harvard University. McGuire serves on numerous boards, including those of the International Center for Photography, New York Presbyterian Hospital, The Studio Museum in Harlem and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Judge Janice Rogers Brown
The Uunited States Senate confirmed California Judge Janice Rogers Brown to the federal Court of Appeals. Brown moves up from the California Supreme Court, where she had served since 1996. Prior to that, she served in the California Court of Appeals, Third Appellate District, and was deputy legislative counsel in the Office of Legislative Council in California. A native of Luverne, Ala., she holds a law degree from UCLA.
Bonnie St. John
Bonnie St. John joined The Leader’s Edge as managing director of special programs. She will be based in the New York office. St. John has been a coach for The Leader’s Edge for the past year in the Executive Program for Women of Color. In her new position, she will use her extensive network to introduce The Leader’s Edge to a broader national client base. St. John studied international political economy at Harvard University and economics at Oxford University, London, as a Rhodes Scholar. The Leader’s Edge is dedicated to the leadership development and advancement of high-potential and executive women.
