37 Director of Service Operations, N.Y.C. - General Electric Healthcare, Melville, N.Y.

Janeen T. Uzzell, 37, is director of service operations at General Electric Healthcare. As director, she is the business leader for a $14 million revenue group with more than 100 diagnostic imaging “C-level” management customers, 30 engineers, and 10 equipment and service sales managers. The only minority female in her role in the Northeast, she handles all service issues for GE Healthcare in hospitals and imaging centers in New York City, acting, essentially, as “the face of GE” to her customers.

With a degree in mechanical engineering from North Carolina A&T State University and an M.B.A. from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Uzzell’s early career path placed her as an engineer in corporate America. Downsized, she started The Reid Group LLC, an engineering consulting company specializing in technical documentation and serving clients in the pharmaceutical industry. Although the venture was a success, Uzzell was lured back to corporate America, working for companies such as Kvaener John Brown Engineering and Telcordia Technologies Inc. before being recruited by General Electric.

Uzzell is active in GE Healthcare’s African-American Forum, the Women’s Network and GE’s Elfun Group. Uzzell is also a board member of NCA&T and the Greater Newark Business Development Consortium, and a member of the Usoni Investment Club. She also finds time to serve as a mentor and tutor and to join professional organizations such as the National Black M.B.A. Association, the National Association of Female Executives and the National Society of Black Engineers. She is also a founding member of her church.

Her parents, Uzzell says, “worked tirelessly to ensure that I had a premier education, and did their best to. . .prepare me for the challenges and obstacles I would face in life.” She also expresses gratitude to Glen MacArthur for recognizing and cultivating her leadership skills early in her career. As she continues to make strides in her professional life, Uzzell reminds herself to be patient with the process. “Great souls are grown through struggles and storms and seasons of sufferings,” she often says.
