Rhonda Mims grew up in the small town of North-Augusta, in South Carolina, but that did not stop her form having big dreams. She recalls being interested in government and social justice since elementary school and says “I love policy and strategy work, so becoming a lawyer was a way for me to become an influencer.”
Mims received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of South Carolina and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. She currently holds the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (previously NASD) Series 7 and 66 designations, and is a member of the South Carolina Bar Association.
After practicing law for nearly 10 years she moved into the corporate arena to broaden her career options. Today, she is the president and senior vice president of ING Foundation, overseeing the corporate responsibility strategy for the foundation’s U.S. operations. She also has oversight for the company’s business principles, investment and finance policies, workforce diversity, diversity marketing, and corporate philanthropy. She says, “I really enjoy creating and building programs that have a societal impact.”
Throughout her career, Mims has received numerous accolades, including the Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s Corporate Leader Award in 2010. The same year, NBC Nightly News featured her in its “Making a Difference” segment. A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, she serves as vice chair of the Executive Leadership Foundation and is affiliated with several other organizations, including America’s Promise Alliance, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center, the Association of Corporate Contributions Professionals.
When she isn’t working or spending time with her daughter, Mims enjoys interior decorating. If she had the time and money, Mims says, she would devote her life to public service, which would take her toward fulfilling her long-term goal of becoming a United Nations diplomat.
