First Vice President/Diverse Segments Development Leader
    Wells Fargo Advisors L.L.C.
    St. Louis, Mo.
    Age: 39

In May 2010, Wendy Renae McSweeney experienced a paradigm shift in her career after a “chance” encounter with motivational author J.P. Hansen. “We spent three hours together on a flight talking candidly about my life and career aspirations,” she explains. “He emphasized the value of tying passion to purpose by choosing a career path that reflects what drives and motivates you.”

When Wells Fargo Advisors relocated its headquarters from Richmond, Va., to St. Louis, Mo., in 2008, McSweeney was selected to work on the company’s diversity initiative. She says, “I found my true passion for using my gifts and talents to serve others by bringing people together to drive positive change.” Hansen’s conversation and his book, The Bliss List, convinced her to pursue a relationship management role at Wells Fargo. “The firm deepened their focus on the growth and development of diverse team members by creating my role. I am now responsible for designing strategies that increase the productivity and retention of our African-American, women and LGBT financial advisers and managers.”

Her childhood love of numbers and mathematics led her to obtain a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Virginia Union University and a master’s in business administration from the University of Phoenix. McSweeney is a St. Louis Business Diversity Initiative Fellows alumni, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., a board member of the Professional Organization of Women and a leadership giver to the United Way of St. Louis. Her favorite pastime is spending time with family and friends. “Being so far away from home showed me the importance of sharing ‘quality’ time. I’m with Jalen, Chris and Mimi every chance I get. Whether in person, by phone, on Skype or presents in the mail — I ensure my niece and nephews do not forget me,” she laughs.
