    Principal
    Mercer
    New York City
    Age: 36

Daniel B. Beatty is a principal with Mercer, a wholly owned subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc., and global leader for human resources and related financial advice, products and services. He is responsible for the operational performance of the consulting team, mergers and acquisitions, and the rolling out of global technology platforms to consultants. He acknowledges a previous supervisory role at Harley-Davidson Motor Co. as being instrumental in shaping him as a professional. “It was a very fast-paced environment and you had to make decisions on the fly. To this day, fifteen years later, a lot of the traits that I developed there are still with me. I’m all about swift decisive actions and I’m very data driven,” says Beatty. At Harley-Davidson, he was greatly influenced, and continues to be, by his first mentor, Mark Parrish.  “He was able to demonstrate acute knowledge but was also very approachable. That was the benchmark for how I wanted to operate because I saw how he was able to get results. He had the technical and the tactical know-how and could effectively negotiate deals,” says Beatty.

Beatty is especially proud of his Doctor of Management degree in organization processes from the University of Maryland University College. “I switched jobs, got married, moved to a different city and even took time off between coursework and writing my dissertation, but I never quit,” he says. He has a bachelor’s in industrial engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, an MBA in operations from Lebanon Valley College and is a Six Sigma Black Belt. He teaches classes in strategy and operations management at Fordham University and says, “The sad fact is that there just aren’t a lot of instructors that look like me.” Beatty enjoys frequent travel, indulging in the cuisines of different cultures, mentoring young professionals and spending time with his family.
