  • Kingsley Mordi

Head, Brands and Communications, Visafone Communications Ltd. Lagos, Nigeria. Age: 36

Born in Nigeria’s Delta State, Kingsley Mordi says God’s guidance and his own determination and focus kept him on track as he pursued his professional goals. “Do your best at all times and leave the rest to God,” he often comments.

Mordi heads Brands and Communications at Visafone Ltd., a pre-eminent Nigerian telecommunications service provider deemed in 2008 the country’s Best ICT Company and Best Telecom Brand. Mordi oversees Visafone’s integrated marketing communications initiatives and public relations. He manages brand development and implementation and all related marketing and advertising campaigns. He previously worked for MTN Nigeria Communications, beginning as a trade marketer and eventually as a regional marketing manager, and at Diamond Bank as products and retail brands manager.

Mordi began his career as a sales consultant for Phones 4U, London, and later Phones 4U franchise operations in Lagos. His belief that “image, personal or brand, contributes largely to total success” was a key reason why he chose a career that would allow him to use image perception for personal success and influence the achievements of others.

Mordi is committed to doing what he can to address local community issues and feels motivated to educate the less privileged.  “I am convinced that knowledge is the bedrock for any great accomplishment and human society,” he says. He participates in several speaking engagements at schools and events for young people and has shared his knowledge and time as a mentor to several young professionals at work. In doing so, he hopes to “groom a fresh flock of positive-minded Nigerians.”

Mordi has a bachelor’s degree with honors in economics from the University of Ilorin in Nigeria, a master’s degree in business administration, and certificates in brand management from the Lagos Business School. He is a member of the Advertising Practitioner’s Council of Nigeria and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.

The Most Studied Group of Women

While discussing The Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation survey of Black women (See Headliner, Page 8) with a friend of mine, she repeated a comment on the subject from a friend of hers: “We’re the most studied group of women.” That gave me pause. When our conversation ended, I reflected on portrayals of Black women, individually or as a group, in the last year.
