Elizabeth D. Moore says dinner-table debates in her childhood made her the attorney she is today. “Being given the challenge to form an argument and then the freedom to state it, helped me find my voice and my backbone,” says Moore, adding that she needed both throughout her legal career.

Named to her current position as general counsel of Consolidated Edison Co. of New York Inc. last May, Moore is the chief legal officer for one of the nation’s largest investor-owned energy companies. Prior to joining the utility, Moore was a partner at Nixon Peabody L.L.P., counseling clients in the areas of public finance, government regulation and employment law, co-chairing the firm’s Diversity Action Committee and established an award-winning inclusion program. She previously served in the administration of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo for 12 years, culminating her tenure as counsel to the governor from 1991 to 1994.

In this role, she directed the executive chamber’s legal staff in negotiating on behalf of the governor’s legislative and budget priorities. She also managed and resolved the state’s complex litigation matters. While she has accomplished much professionally, she is most proud of her efforts to have Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday recognized as a state holiday.  

The veteran attorney sits on the board of trustees at Cornell University, the University of Rochester and Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. Human Resource Executive named her among its “100 Most Powerful Employment Attorneys in America” and she was honored in a Girl Scout Council of Greater New York Annual Tribute.

She is the recipient of Cornell University’s Groat Award, the New York City Bar Association’s Diversity Champion Award and the Association of Black Women Attorneys’ Legal Community Award. Moore holds a law degree from St. John’s University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University.
